Understanding common signs of nursing home neglect and abuse

It’s not something you want to think about, but it’s possible a loved one could be the victim of nursing home neglect and abuse.

If you have any reason to believe this is the case, don’t wait a single day to take action. Here are some of the most common signs of nursing home neglect and abuse:

  • Sudden weight loss: This could mean that your loved one is not receiving the proper care in regards to nutrition.
  • Bedsores: When a person doesn’t move around enough, it’s likely they’ll begin to develop bedsores
  • Injuries from a fall: Depending on your loved one’s health, they should be accompanied by nursing home staff any time they get up to move around.
  • Changes in behavior: Your loved one may realize they’re being abused, but are afraid to share this with you for some reason. This leads to a change in their behavior.
  • Issues with personal hygiene: Know what the facility offers in terms of personal hygiene and make sure your loved one is receiving the proper treatment.

At first, it may be difficult to determine if a loved one is the victim of nursing home neglect and abuse. However, as you dig around, you could come to find that this is exactly what is happening.

After speaking with the staff, focus on finding a new nursing facility for your loved one. You don’t want to leave them where they are, hoping that the staff changes their way.

Once your loved one is in a better place, you can then learn more about your loved one’s legal rights and how to protect them.
