Fatigue is very common after a serious brain injury

Brain injuries can impact your quality of life in many different ways, and some of them may not even seem to be related to the injury. One of the more frustrating ones is an overwhelming and endless sense of fatigue. No matter how much time you spend napping during the day and sleeping at night, you just feel exhausted all the time.

One thing you should know is that this is very common. Some experts say that anywhere from 50 percent to 80 percent of those who suffer traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) deal with some level of fatigue afterward.

Part of the problem with fatigue, other than the general impact on your mood and daily abilities, is that it can stop you from working to heal. You may have suffered other injuries at the same time, or the brain injury itself may impact different parts of your body. You need physical therapy, but it’s tough when you do not have the energy for it.

For example, one woman said that her son always used to have a lot of energy. Then he got involved in a car accident. He had what she called a “critical brain injury” and found himself unable to walk after the crash. He wanted to push himself harder in rehab and physical therapy, but he couldn’t do it because he was so fatigued all the time. It lasted for years. It impacted his mental health and perhaps made it harder for him to physically heal, as well.

If you’re dealing with these types of issues, be sure you understand all of your legal rights and what you can do to seek compensation for medical care, physical therapy and more.
